Did you know?

October 6th, 2008 by Naurene

Quality college education exists in your neighborhood. It's never too late to get your bachelor's or master's degree. With University of Phoenix's flexible schedule and affordable tuition, you can experience a curriculum that fits working professionals who is looking to advance in their careers.

As a graduate school at the University of Phoenix, i enjoy the small class sizes and awesome location. What can be better than a school in your backyard! The curriculum is designed to work in learning teams where we can learn from one another who's already in the workforce. We form learning teams and build team dynamics which i have found important in today's real world. Not only do i learn the essential concepts but most importantly how to apply and articulate it in solving problems in my current organization. My mom once told me, "knowledge is power." And she is absolutely correct! But essentially, i have learned that "applying knowledge is power." I can recall learning all the accounting ratios but without being able to understand what each meant and how to articulate the information. All that knowledge and information did me no good. By understanding the concepts and applying it to understand the financial statements, i am able to make better decisions.

As a single parent of two children, working full time at the Honolulu Advertiser and part time at Aloha Airlines there was no way i could have gone back to school full time to achieve my bachelor's degree, nor master's degree. People thought i was crazy! But guess what, i did. With the determination of being a role model and not allowing my kids to suffer due to my lack of experience i had one goal in mind. My goal was to set an example of how important education is and through perseverance you can accomplish whatever you want in life. I went through all the phases that come with juggling a family, work, and school. I refused to be a statistic, although that was one of my favorite classes.

From typing papers with my left hand while breast feeding at 2 am to making it to my very last capstone class after being discharged from the hospital with the birth of my child in order for me to get an "A" for my grade which unfortunately one of the requirements were to attend all classes. I was merely unstoppable! As tired as i was i knew that there was light at the end of the tunnel.

So who said you can't have a family while going to college. I was blessed to have them both. If you think you are too busy, not enough time, and no support. Think again, only you can control your destiny! What's your motivation?

Does anyone feel the need to go back to school, but hesitate? Have you thought about getting higher education to advance in your career? If i can do it, so can you! Let's talk.

The bus

September 27th, 2008 by Naurene

Have you rode the bus lately? With jobs and schools in downtown, the bus has been so crowded. I was so surprised how some people are so inconsiderate and at times felt like i was in the south. People are reserving seats for their friends who had not come unto the bus yet and others just talk me to sleep. As a growing community, i would think the bus would get more buses to run the mililani express route so people would not have to stand for over an hour. Being short and petite in size, i can't stand to smell another person's armpits or sitting on the dirty ground. Tell us your experience on the bus, we like to hear from you!

Back to work

September 8th, 2008 by Naurene

This past two weeks has been mentally draining learning new computer applications and a new trade. I just started a new job since i got laid off from the Honolulu Advertiser and i love it. I would love it more if it was closer to Mililani. Traffic is rough going to town when schools' in session. It takes me more than 1 hour to get to work.

We need to create more jobs in Central Oahu and the leeward side to reduce the traffic congestion. And take me off the road, always wanted to work close to home so i can go home to eat lunch.

I believe a solution to traffic congestion could be to implement virtual offices. Companies like JetBlue and SAP have already implemented this in their organization. People are more productive and happier towards their customers. They can spend time with their family and work flexible hours. Most of all, the companies save on overhead expenses. Would you like to work for an organization that allows you to work from home and spend time with your family? What do you see as the pros and cons of virtual offices?

Going with my gut

August 31st, 2008 by Naurene

My mom always told me to go with my gut feelings and hopefully you will make the right decisions. I'm a skeptic and also a believer in my intuitions. Sometimes, i can make rational decisions and other times i am prone to go with my gut.

I am going back to work soon and i may need a babysitter for my 2 year old son. With all the news and media talking about babysitters and what they did, it scares me. How do you decide if this is the right sitter for my child? I heard about going through the checklist, and PATCH, but that don't matter to me what looks good on paper. Looks could be deceiving--who knows what a predator may look like?

Hey parents, how do you decide if this sitter is good for your child? Do you have any suggestions or references of outstanding child care providers?
